The Presence of the Holy Spirit
“And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him.” Judges 16:20
This is probably one of the saddest verses in the Bible. Samson was a man who was given unique ability from God. From the womb, he was set apart to judge Israel, blessed with supernatural strength, and given the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit. He truly was a man unlike any other. But as Samson grew, his heart was captivated by the ways of the world, and he compromised his unique calling for the pleasures of the world. His actions ultimately brought him to the point that he didn’t realize when the presence of the Lord departed from him.
What makes this verse even more discouraging is that it happens over and over in believer’s lives today. Like Samson, we have been given a wonderful standing with God. He has given us His Spirit, unique power through prayer, and special standing as a child of God. But all too often, we sacrifice our gifts for the acceptance and pleasure of the world. We go through life not knowing that the presence of God is not with us. Oh, we are eternally secure and on our way to heaven, but we are missing out on the daily walk that we could be having with God. We go about our daily activities thinking God is there, but missing out on His power in our lives. Christian, make sure God’s presence is with you daily; desire to be filled with the Spirit. Don’t be like Samson. Know when your sin has hindered God’s presence in your life, and quickly repent to restore your relationship with Him!
